WWT’s wetland reserves are jewels in the crown of much bigger wetland landscapes, or as we call them, Waterscapes. And we have big plans to play a key role in conserving and enhancing them. Could you be the perfect person to be at the forefront these efforts and help shape the future of landscape scale conservation?  If so then we’d love to hear from you.

Wetlands are home to a disproportionate amount of the UK’s wildlife, but they need our help – up to 90% of our wetlands have been lost and those remaining are fragmented and degraded. The Covid pandemic has shown us the importance of nature to our lives and the need for us to build back better. Rich, diverse wetland landscapes buzzing with life need to be a central part of that change.

While the concept of landscape-scale conservation is not new, very little of the attention has been on wetland landscapes and now is the perfect time for you to help us change that. Opportunities such as biodiversity net gain, the Nature Recovery Network, and the new Environmental Land Management scheme represent a once-in-a-generation chance that we cannot afford to miss.

We are looking for someone with substantial experience in delivering landscape scale conservation, with the creative spark and enthusiasm needed to ensure our Waterscapes are at the vanguard of that effort into the future.

Role Outline

You will be responsible for a small team and collaborate with a much larger team spread across the organisation responsible for developing and delivering against our Waterscape ambitions, starting with three focal Waterscapes – The Severn Estuary & Vale, Somerset Coast to Levels, and Ouse Washes. We want to develop and demonstrate a successful model in these places and then aim to expand the programme to the wetland landscapes around our other WWT sites.

You will be a key source of knowledge and understanding on wetland landscape conservation within the organisation, cooperating closely with site based teams as well as central Reserves Management and Evidence teams. You will also be the trusted face of WWT to many key stakeholders within these Waterscapes and work closely with our Communications, Policy and Advocacy teams to promote our work and push for wider change to help enable it.

About You

You will be an extremely committed person who cares deeply about the success and impact of your work. You’ll be enthusiastic about what you believe in and have creative ideas for how to fund and deliver sustainable landscape-scale conservation work.

You’ll be a real people person, able to nurture trusted relationships with colleagues in other teams and counterparts other organisations. You will enjoy working in an organisation with a strong “can-do” attitude that wants to make a difference and is willing to run with good ideas.

You’ll have experience in successfully delivering major projects and understand the importance of taking a professional approach to managing projects. You’ll also be a great communicator - advocating your work to wide range of stakeholders.

If this sounds like you then we would love to hear from you. Come and join us in delivering our vision of a world where healthy wetland nature thrives and enriches lives.

In return for your hard work and dedication you’ll enjoy a wide range of benefits including:

  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays increasing to 30 days after 5 years’ service
  • Contributory pension scheme (conditions apply)
  • Life assurance
  • Free car parking and secure bike storage areas
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Free entry to all our centres
