This position is based at WWT Slimbridge, but will require occasional work from GWT’s HQ at Robinswood Hill, Gloucester and regular travel within the Severn Vale project area.
Role Context
The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, along with partners Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and a suite of local landowners, has been successful in securing nearly £700,000 to deliver a pilot project under Defra’s flagship Landscape Recovery scheme.
Landscape Recovery is the most ambitious of the new Environmental Land Management schemes (ELMs), which aim to support the rural economy while achieving the goals of the 25 Year Environment Plan, halting nature’s decline by 2030 and a commitment to reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Eelscapes: restoring the Severn Vale’s wetland mosaics is our exciting two-year development phase project, with the ambition of restoring naturally functioning and climate-resilient floodplain wetlands in one of the UK’s most important river systems and recovering the populations of two threatened and iconic species: the European eel and true fox-sedge. Working with a network of interested land managers, we will explore options to aid nature’s recovery at the landscape scale whilst providing multiple benefits for local communities and generating sustainable business and investment opportunities. Any subsequent work on the ground would depend on successful completion of this development phase, and on securing funding/investment for delivery.

Role Outline
Your role will be responsible for the coordination, delivery and successful completion of the development phase of the ‘Eelscapes’ project and, by working positively with all partners and stakeholders, ensuring that it not only achieves WWTs ambitious aims but also complies with the conditions of the funding and all relevant regulations, which may include gaining formal statutory consents.
You will manage a small project team, both directly and indirectly, and oversee the contributions of external consultants to appraise the options for future land management plans and business and financial models. The project team will include colleagues working at our partner organisation, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, so you will need to ensure that procedures for effective communication and teamwork are implemented. You will have oversight of all work streams, monitoring progress and reporting regularly to the funder, Project Board and Project Advisory Group in accordance with WWT’s Project Management Framework. You will be responsible for overall budget management and for coordinating all grant claims with support from WWT’s Philanthropy and Finance Teams.
About You
It is anticipated that you will have a respect and working knowledge of the natural environment, including an understanding of UK wetland habitats and species. You will be an experienced conservationist, adept at building links between NGO partners, local and national statutory stakeholders, and local communities. The successful candidate will be at the heart of one of the most high profile conservation initiatives in the region, and will need to be inspiring, collaborative, diplomatic and energetic.
For this role, we can offer flexibility around working from home. This role will need to attend Slimbridge or the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust offices (as required) a minimum of twice a week, and there will be times when you may be required to work from the office or on site every day.
